Review: Storm Born by Richelle Mead (Dark Swan #1)

Publisher - Bantam Books
Publication Date - 14th August 2008
Paperback - 512 pages
Genre - Urban Fantasy

Source - Library

Rating - 5 out of 5: It was amazing!

Book Info - Just typical. No love life to speak of for months, then all at once, every horny creature in the Otherworld wants to get in your pants...

Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who does a brisk trade banishing spirits and fey who cross into the mortal world. Mercenary, yes, but a girl's got to eat. Her most recent case, however, is enough to ruin her appetite. Hired to find a teenager who has been taken to the Otherworld, Eugenie comes face to face with a startling prophecy - one that uncovers dark secrets about her past and claims that Eugenie's first-born will threaten the future of the world as she knows it.

Now Eugenie is a hot target for every ambitious demon and Otherworldy ne'er-do-well, and the ones who don't want to knock her up want her dead. Eugenie handles a Glock as smoothly as she wields a wand, but she needs some formidable allies for a job like this. She finds them in Dorian, a seductive fairy king with a taste for bondage, and Kiyo, a gorgeous shape-shifter who redefines animal attraction. But with enemies growing bolder and time running out, Eugenie realizes that the greatest danger is yet to come, and it lies in the dark powers that are stirring to life within her....

My Thoughts - The main character, Eugenie Markham, is just great. She is strong, independent and so, so funny. I found myself laughing out loud during many parts of the book as she is brilliant at the witty one-liner. But what I liked most about her was the journey that she went on through the book. She starts off hating the gentry and is incredibly prejudiced against them, after all she has been told constantly by her parents about how evil they are ever since she was a little girl. However, through her interactions with Kiyo; a gorgeous kitsune (shapeshifter) who she feels an incredible attraction towards; and Dorian, Eugenie realises that the gentry are actually not as bad as she had been lead to believe. These men teach her that, although there are some gentry who do deserve to be hated, not all of them behave in such a way. When she realises that she is half-gentry herself, Eugenie has to do a lot of soul searching as she is now part of what she once hated.

I loved the Otherworld that the author created. The book is full of description of this magical world and I found that really interesting to read. I also enjoyed reading about the character of Dorian. He comes across as incredibly easy going and very funny and he doesn’t seem to take much seriously in life. It is from the interactions between Eugenie and Dorian that some of the funniest scenes occur. I would love to see Eugenie and Dorian getting together at some point during the series as there is a huge amount of chemistry between the two of them. Although I liked the character of Kiyo, he just seemed to be too much of a goody goody to be a serious part of Eugenie’s life for too long.

There is a part near the end of  the book that just didn't work for me. I can't really go into any detail about it without giving too much away, but it feels very out of keeping with the rest of the story, I had trouble understanding what was happening and it didn't  really add anything to Eugenie's story. But this is my only complaint about Storm Born and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book.

Summary - I really enjoyed the storyline of the book and it is full of action, humour, romance and magic. It moves along at a fast pace and ended with lots of unanswered questions, making me really want to read the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book to any fans of Richelle Mead or urban fantasy.

Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games #1)

Publisher - Scholastic
Publication Date - 5th January 2009
Paperback - 464 pages
Genre - YA Dystopian

Source -Purchased

Rating - 5 out of 5: It was amazing!

Book Info - In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

My Thoughts - What really stood out for me in this book was the realistic world that is created by the author. From the descriptions that are used I got completely lost in the story and at times whilst reading this book I even had dreams about being a resident of Panem (and some of the dreams were pretty scary!). I fell so in love with the characters and their tragic story that I couldn't put the book down.

Katniss is an amazing main character. Her ability to survive no matter what is thrown at her is inspirational but at times she does take it too far and I felt that the way she treated Peeta in the arena was very unfair. I really liked Peeta. He seems loyal, down-to-earth, strong and the type of person everybody likes and respects. I couldn't really get a feel for Gale. I didn't feel as though I learnt enough about him to feel much either way.

The only problem I had with The Hunger Games was that, even though I had tried to avoid reading spoilers about the series, I was still able to guess some parts of the ending because I knew that there were more books in the series. This, of course, was no fault of the author - it was just because I was coming to the series when all the books had already been released. Although this didn't stop me from loving the book,  it did make the ending less of a surprise.

Summary - The Hunger Games is an amazing start to a series, with realistic world building, characters that  are easy to love and even a hint of romance. It is a story about courage, hope and survival. I really can't recommend this series enough and if you haven't started this series yet, what are you waiting for?

Welcome to my blog! Anybody want to win some books? (Contest Closed!!!)

Hi all, welcome to my new blog!

So, I guess you are wondering who I am and why I am starting a blog. Well, my name is Chrissie and I am a 29 year old british girl who loves to read, as well as spending time with my husband and my two young boys. I am now a full time mum but before I had my second child I was a librarian. I absolutely loved the job (who wouldn't love being surrounded by books all the time!) but I wanted to stay at home with my boys and enjoy them whilst they are still young.

As for why I started a blog the answer is simple: I have a terrible memory and I want a record of the books that I have read. Once Upon a Series is actually my second blog. I ran Chrissie's Corner for almost a year until my husband became very ill at the beginning of the year and I just didn't have time to continue with it. But during my time off I spent a lot of time thinking about the direction I wanted my blog to go in and came up with some great ideas for features etc and Once Upon a Series is the result.

One of these features is my list of series' from my favourite genres. Please take a look at these lists and hopefully you'll be able to find some new books to read. Also, feel free to tell me about any that I've missed (there's bound to be many!) and I'll add them to the list. The genres I have written lists for are:
Mystery
Paranormal Romance
Urban Fantasy
YA

Now that you've learnt a little bit about me here is the important question - Who would like to win some books???? In celebration of my new blog I am giving away a copy of the first two books in the Mercy series by Rebecca Lim to one lucky winner.

Mercy
Mercy wakes on a school bus bound for Paradise, a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business... or thinks they do. But Mercy has a secret life. She is an angel, doomed to return to earth, taking on a new human form each time she does, in an effort to resolve a cataclysmic rift between heavenly beings.
In Paradise, Mercy meets Ryan, an eighteen-year-old whose sister was kidnapped two years ago and is presumed dead. When another girl is also taken, Mercy knows she has to act quickly and use extraordinary powers to rescue her, even if it means exposing her true identity.
An electric combination of angels, mystery and romance, Mercy is the first book in a major new series.

Exile
An angel in exile, Mercy is doomed to return repeatedly to earth, taking on a new human form each time she does. Now she "wakes" as unhappy teen Lela, a girl caring for her dying mother but never herself.
As her shattered memory begins to return, Mercy remembers Ryan, the boy she fell in love with in another life, and Luc, the angel haunting her dreams. Will Mercy risk Lela's life to be reunited with her heart's true desire.
An electric combination of angels, mystery and romance, Exile is the second book in the spellbinding Mercy series.
