2012 Speculative Romance Challenge

As I've been reading a lot of Paranormal Romance recently, I thought that this challenge would be perfect for me!

So here are the rules:

Timeline: 01 Jan 2012 - 31 Dec 2012

Rules: There are FOUR (4) LEVELS to choose from:
- One Sexy Demon: Read 6 Speculative Romance novels in 2012
- Two Sexy Werewolves: Read 12 Speculative Romance novels in 2012
- Three Sexy Vampires: Read 18 Speculative Romance novels in 2012
- Four Sexy Archangels: Read 24 Speculative Romance novels in 2012

You don't have to select your books ahead of time, you can just add them as you go. Also if you do list them upfront you can change them, nothing is set in stone! The books you choose can crossover into other challenges you have on the go.

You can join at anytime. All books read in 2012 count towards the challenge regardless of when you sign up.

At the beginning of Jan 2012, you will find a link to specific month to add your reviews.

Audiobooks do not count, but all other formats are accepted.

Only fiction, no non-fiction.

This challenge can crossover to other challenges.

GENRES:
 - Paranormal romance
- Dark fantasy romance
- Urban fantasy romance
- Steampunk romance
- Sci-fi romance
- Apocalyptic romance

I'm going to attempt the Two Sexy Werewolves level and read 12 Speculative Romance novels. Hopefully I will read more than this but I thought I'd go for a level I'm pretty certain I can achieve. I'm not sure what all of the 12 books will be yet, but here are the ones I definitely want to read in 2012:

1. Angel Slayer by Michele Hauf
2.Fallen by Michele Hauf
3. Ashes of Angels by Michele Hauf
4. The Darkest Whisper by Gena Showalter
5. The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter
6. The Darkest Lie by Gena Showalter
7. The Darkest Secret by Gena Showalter
8. The Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter

In fact I started this blog with the hope that it would encourage me to complete a few more series - so with the help of this challenge I should be cruising through all my unfinished series!

Here are the rules:

1) All books that are part of a continuing series qualify (i.e. Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, James Patterson's Alex Cross, etc. etc.)

2) It doesn't matter if you have 1 or 10 books in a series to complete it, it qualifies (i.e. if you only need to read one more Sookie Stackhouse book to complete the goal, that's fine) The goal is to complete a series from wherever you are up to until the last published book.

3) The qualification period is January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Books must be read during this time frame to count.

4) Take the button above and post about it. Use the Mr. Linky below to sign up, but make sure you link it directly to your post about this challenge.

5) If you don't have a blog, that's fine. Just leave a comment to sign up and tell us what you are reading.

6) Any format of book counts - audio, ebook, etc.

7) You should choose the series you want to finish before the challenge begins, but it isn't necessary. It's fine to change series during the year - as long as you complete whichever series it is.

8) Choose a level....
Level 1 - Complete 1 series.
Level 2 - Complete 2 series.
Level 3 - Complete 3 or more series.

Of course, I have decided to go for level three to try and complete three or more series. During 2012 I am going to try and complete the following series:

1) Morganville Vampire by Rachel Caine (Only 1 left to read)
A. Last Breath

2) Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare (2 to read)
A. City of Glass
B. City of Fallen Angels

3) Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris (7 to read)
A. Dead as a Doornail
B. Definitely Dead
C. All Together Dead
D. From Dead to Worse
E. Dead and Gone
F. Dead in the Family
G. Dead Reckoning

4) Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead (2 to read)
A. Spirit Bound
B. Last Sacrifice

5) Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter (5 to read)
A. The Darkest Whisper
B. The Darkest Passion
C. The Darkest Lie
D. The Darkest Secret
E. The Darkest Surrender

Review: Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs (Alpha & Omega #2)

Publisher – Orbit
Publication Date – 1st October 2009
Paperback – 304 Pages
Genre – Urban Fantasy
Source Purchased

Rating - 2 out of 5: It was ok

Book Info - Anna Latham didn't know how complicated life could get - until she became a werewolf.  And now she's not just part of any pack, but under the direct supervision of Bran, leader of the North American werewolves.  And her mate is his son Charles, the pack enforcer.

With all the advances that have been made in forensics, the werewolves will not be able to hide their existence from humans much longer - and Bran wants their coming out party to be on his terms.  But his European counterparts don't see things the same way.  Anna and Charles are chosen to represent Bran at a key meeting.  But when a French werewolf, one of Bran's most vocal opponents, is found murdered, Charles's reputation shoots him to the top of the suspect list  And among the wolves, there is one penalty for breaking the law: death.  The killer must be found, or Charles will take the fall.

My Thoughts - Hunting Ground carries on a few weeks after the events of Cry Wolf. Although I enjoyed the first book in the series, I did not enjoy this book as much.  Anna and Charles who are newly mated, must attend a conference in Seattle with other werewolf leaders to discuss the fact that the Marrock will soon be announcing their existence to the rest of the world. Because of this a huge portion of the novel is focused on werewolf politics, which meant that there is a lot of talk and no action for the most part and it did become quite confusing and complicated at times. This meant that the story was very slow moving at the start and I didn't find it particularly interesting.

However, it does begin to improve just over halfway through but this may be too late for some readers who might have already given up on the book by this time. I perservered because I am a big fan of Briggs' Mercy Thompson series, but this was the only thing keeping me going through the first half.  The action does begin to pick up when somebody is killed and it becomes clear that Anna is also a target of the murderer. It becomes more than just talk between all the uber-dominant wolves that are gathered and more than a few fangs are bared in the second half of the story. The writing became a lot more like what I expected from the author and it made me feel that I hadn't wasted time ploughing through the first half of the book.

But even the mystery element of the story wasn't great. I managed to work out who was behind the murders way before Charles and Anna did so the ending didn't really hold any surprises for me.

The final thing that didn't sit right with me about Hunting Ground was the relationship between Charles and Anna. Their wolves declared each other as mates in the first book, but I just didn't feel the connection between them which I found frustrating at times. As a result, I had trouble connecting with them.

Summary - Hunting Ground is an ok Urban Fantasy novel. I think that fans of the author would enjoy this book, so long as they persevere with it. If you've never read anything by Patricia Briggs before then I would highly recommend her Mercy Thompson series instead - that is one of the best series' I've come across since I started reading this genre!

Other books in the series:

2. Hunting Ground

Cover Reveal: Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt!

I'm very excited to be able to reveal the cover of Chosen Ones, a new dystopian novel that is scheduled to be published by Entangled Publishing in April 2012! The cover is beautiful and the blurb sounds amazing! I am really looking forward to reading this book next year.

What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?

Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

A Perfect Ten with Elizabeth Hunter!

It's time for my new feature A Perfect Ten, where bloggers talk about their top ten favourite series of all time! Today I am being joined by author Elizabeth Hunter who has picked some more series for us to salivate over. So without further ado I will hand you over to Elizabeth...

To a lifelong bookworm, narrowing down your ten favorite series is pretty difficult! Like a lot of readers, I like series books because I enjoy revisiting characters and worlds that I find compelling. I also like the longer plot arcs you can explore with a series!

In the end, I decided to not just pick my ten favorite, but those that I felt had the most influence on me as a reader and a writer. As I looked over the list, I found a great combination of fantasy, history, science fiction, and mystery, all genres that have contributed to my own novels.

There’s no possible way that I could rank these from favorite to least favorite, so I am listing them in the order that I read them. I hope you enjoy!
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
I think I started this series with my parents reading to me, and I ended reading them for myself. I was a huge Narnia fan, and I still enjoy reading them to this day. Lewis knew how to write for children without writing down to them.

The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder
My family has been in the United States for hundreds of years, and I remember my great-aunt telling stories about “proving up” homestead land in the Dakotas as a child. These books taught me not just about my country’s frontier history, but my own family history, as well.

The Nancy Drew Mysteries by Carolyn Keene
A classic for any little girl! I devoured these books, and reveled in solving the fantastic mysteries that Nancy solved with her friends. A smart girl’s literary candy.

Kairos Series by Madeleine L'Engle
The series that started with A Wrinkle in Time, the book that introduced me to science fiction blended with fantasy in the most beautiful way. I loved the characters, the family dynamics, and the vastness of the universe L’Engle created.

The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis
An under-read Lewis classic starting with Out of the Silent Planet. These books are another blend of science fiction and fantasy that will sweep you away with their language. I recommend them to any scifi fan.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien
Though I read The Hobbit as a child, I was in high school before I read the full trilogy. There is nothing I can say about these books that hasn’t been said by other, smarter fantasy fans. The gold standard for high fantasy in my mind.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
The first time I cracked open an Anne Rice novel, I was hooked! Never a horror fan, I was seduced by Lestat. My first vampire love!

Kay Scarpetta Novels by Patricia Cornwell
Before CSI was sexy on TV, Cornwell wrote her brilliant medical examiner/detective Kay Scarpetta in Postmortem. A smart, professional woman who solved crimes not with superpowers, but with her mind, Scarpetta is a must-read for mystery fans.

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
I wasn’t introduced to Harry until my 20s when I was teaching English in middle school. I had to know what all my students were raving about, so I picked up the books. It was love at first delumination.

The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
The series that brought me back to vampires, it combined fantasy with the quirky Southern fiction I had grown to love when I lived in Texas. This was, quite literally, a life-changing series for me. It was after I read and got involved in the online SVM community that I started blogging and writing my own fiction. Thank you, Ms. Harris!

Thanks to Chrissie for letting me share my Perfect Ten! Hope you might find something in here that you enjoy, too! I’d love to introduce you to a new favorite. For more about my writing, please visit my blog, elizabethhunterwrites.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks for reading,

Elizabeth Hunter

Thanks Elizabeth! I absolutely love the Southern Vampire Mysteries too! And there are a few series there already on my TBR list.

How about you? Have you read any of these series? Will you be adding any to your TBR list? Let Elizabeth and I know what you think!
